I’m doing a brief survey for myself and my fellow authors in regards to how people learn about the books they want to buy. Leave a comment with your yes/no answers and I’ll put you in a drawing for a PDF copy of my July 1st release Dirty Little Trip.
1. Do you read the promos/excerpts on the yahoo loops & have you bought a book after doing so?
2. Do you read the reviews of books posted on the various websites/blogs & have you bought a book after doing so?
3. Do you attend author/publisher chats on the yahoo loops and/or in chat rooms/forums & have you bought a book after doing so?
4. Do you buy books from seeing an advertisement/banner for them?
5. Do you read interviews/author spotlights posted on various websites/blogs & have you bought a book after doing so?
6. Do you belong to on-line book groups/fan sites (facebook/myspace) & have you bought a book from the information found there?
7. Do you buy books from author name recognition?
8. Do you buy books from a family/friend referral?
9. Do you buy books from reading blogs/bulletins?
Have something additional to add? Feel free to let us know if you learn of books a different way than what’s listed above.
Thanks for your input on this! It’s much appreciated! The drawing for Dirty Little Trip will be held on Sunday, June 28 at 6 PM PST and the winner will be announced on my blog Monday, June 29.

1. No - I can't keep up with those.
2. No - I don't trust reviews.
3-6 = yes
7. Absolutely!
8. Egads, NO!!
9. By authors, yes. Readers, no.
I typically purchase my books from small presses online, so I check their websites periodically for new releases. I also keep up with authors via their myspace/facebook/whatever to see their new releases. I'm biased, however, in that I will read anything by a fellow glbt author, and anything m/m. :-)
Thank you AuthorJansen! Your input helps!

Here's my answers:
1. I sometimes read them. Depends upon how much time I have. LOL! And yes, I have purchased a book after reading the excerpt.
2. If the authors is posting the review, I will scan it. Otherwise I prefer to form my own opinion.
3. Yes to both.
4. I have.
5. If I am interested in what the author has to say, yes. Also, if something intrigues me from a post, I will check on the interview or whatever it might be to give it a once over. And yes, I have purchased books base upon both of those.
6. Yes, I do. And yes, I have.
7. Absolutely without a doubt.
8. Sometimes but it's rare as they like vastly different things than I do.
9. I have. Sometimes it's by the author, promo group or other entity but it would depend upon if I find the book's premise intriguing.
I have also been known to buy books because of the blurb or the front cover. Sometimes, I've been surprised and sometimes I wish I had saved my money.

1. Yes to Promos, but not on Yahoo groups. Too many groups.
2. I read the reviews on new authors, or those I haven't read, to get info about the books, not how they rate them.
3. I love going to the chat rooms, as a set time for a chat, rather than all day on a yahoo group. I've bought lots after a chat
4. Yes I buy books from seeing banners about them
5. Yep I love the interviews and spotlights. Helps me find out about new authors and books and yes I have bought books after
6. Yep I'm on Facebook, MySpace, GoodReads, etc. I have bought books from recommendations there
7. Yep, I have favorites and once I read them I don't want to miss the rest of their books
8. Readers are great with recommending books !I love reading reader blogs on their posts of what they read and the like. I buy lots that way. I love too when authors visit readers blogs
9. Yes to the blogs. I'm not sure what Bulletins are.
I also learn of books as I mentioned on GoodReads, Shelfari and a bit on BookPlace. I love those because its all about books. My addiction, :) I love to go to evening chats where the set up time is for chats. When there is yahoo loops, they can be all day and its hard for me to be able to sit more than a couple hours and sometimes not even that. Too when it comes to authors visiting blogs and groups, we can't be on at the same time. Some of us work different shifts, and from different countries. So I like to see things related to contests and asking authors questions on yahoo loops to be at least 48 hours (2 days) because 24 hours doesn't work if you come on a different time the next day. I honest don't go to those much anymore. Its much too hard for me to follow. I like the evening chats. I get on at that time and can chat along with the authors. Then too love the blogs, and again 48 hours to have them up to visit anytime we are able to to ask questions and be in contests. I've been to some that put up that morning and its over by 5 pm. So I totally missed being able to chat with the authors. Hope that helps!
thanks so much for your detailed answers caffey! they help a lot!
